Last week, Barcelona once again became the epicenter of urban innovation with the Smart City Expo World Congress, a space where governments, businesses, and experts shared a common vision: the cities of the future must be built on data and knowledge, not just infrastructure.

The key to moving towards more sustainable, efficient, and livable cities lies in understanding how we experience our cities. Collecting, analyzing, and using data responsibly allows us to:

Design smarter mobility policies.
Promote real, evidence-based sustainability.

Improve citizens’ quality of life through informed decisions.

In the various talks we attended, the need to equip cities with tools and processes that enable them to take real action against climate change was emphasized, strengthening their resilience and adaptive capacity.

It also became clear that we must prepare for new urban needs:

⚡ Adequate electrical infrastructure that makes it possible to achieve the EU’s decarbonization goals.

🏘️ Policies and support programs that focus not only on energy efficiency improvements, but also on the inclusion and accessibility of our buildings and urban spaces.

All of this reinforces a key idea: only by understanding how we experience cities and relying on data can we make informed decisions to improve mobility, sustainability, and people’s quality of life.
