What changes does the new CPR introduce, and how will they impact the sector?

Mandatory environmental reporting: Manufacturers are required to report climate indicators, CO2 emissions, and energy use.
Data digitization: Digital passports allow for the uniform and accessible integration of environmental and technical information.
Greater circularity: The efficient use of resources and materials with the lowest environmental impact throughout their life cycle is prioritized.
Improved CE marking: The updated CE marking system is designed to prevent “greenwashing.” Internal declarations are no longer sufficient; third-party verification is now a requirement for accessing sustainable projects.

A Step Forward: A New Sustainability Framework Within the CTE (Spanish Technical Building Code).

The updated CTE will introduce the mandatory calculation of a building’s Global Warming Potential (GWP) throughout its life cycle (LCA), strengthen requirements for renewable energy generation and sustainable mobility, and incorporate other criteria.

From 2028 onwards, a comprehensive life cycle assessment consistent with these standards will be mandatory, making LCA a necessary component of building design and permitting.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) as a Gateway to Sustainable Projects:

An EPD provides a reliable, comparable, and verifiable environmental profile that allows for reporting the environmental impacts generated by a product. It is based on information from a life cycle assessment (LCA) in accordance with ISO 14040 and 14044.

Certifications such as LEED, BREEAM, VERDE, DGNB, and WELL reward transparency and traceability, prioritizing materials with third-party EPDs. The updated regulations (RPC and CTE) require data demonstrating the decarbonization and sustainability of products.
