Positive Energy Buildings: keys to decarbonizing the building stock

It was an interesting session on Positive Energy Buildings, where we gained firsthand insight into some of the initiatives that will shape the future of building renovation and decarbonization in Spain and Catalonia.
Particularly noteworthy was the work led by ICAEN to define the baseline and roadmap for Catalonia’s decarbonization plans. This work incorporates energy models and updated climate characterization—including climate change projections—enabling the creation of more realistic scenarios for the transition to a zero-emission building stock.
Also of great interest was the presentation by Aitor Domínguez (IDAE) on the upcoming Building Renovation Passport. This voluntary tool will provide a personalized roadmap for carrying out the necessary measures—in a phased manner—to transform a building into a Zero-Emission Building. Its integration with energy certification processes makes it a powerful instrument for accelerating renovation and decarbonization within the sector.
The final roundtable discussion highlighted a sentiment shared by all participants: decarbonizing the building stock requires a long-term vision and, above all, stability. Continuity in grant programs and public policies is essential for property owners, public authorities, and companies to move forward confidently toward the 2050 climate goals.
We continue to advance toward a more efficient, resilient, and decarbonized building sector.
